A Server Defined

To become a server, it is paramount that one must first harness all the skills and knowledge required by the host, busser and food running positions. In fact, many establishments won’t allow staff to become servers unless they have spent time in each of these other positions, so they prove their abilities before advancements. It’s common practice that even experienced servers who begin working in a new restaurant spend at least one or two shifts in each of the host, busser and food runner positions before they begin serving so they understand the ways in which that particular establishment functions.
